Preparing for the Cornish Coldwater Classic with Lucas Meldrum

Preparing in Coldwater

We caught up with Lucas ahead of the Cornish Coldwater Classic to hear about his preparation, training, and expectations for the competition. The Cornish Coldwater Classic (CCC) is Round 2 of the BWA Pro Windsurfing Series, set against the stunning backdrop of Hayle, Cornwall. Scheduled from 14th to 16th February 2025, this event brings together some of the best windsurfers in the UK. As a Roll Over Event, it accounts for the unpredictable wind conditions by extending to backup dates (21st-23rd February 2025) if necessary. This ensures that competitors and spectators experience the best possible conditions for high-quality windsurfing action.

The event takes place at Gwithian Beach, one of the premier windsurfing locations in England's South West. Known for its powerful waves and shifting wind conditions, it provides a true test of skill for the competitors. The competition is open to all fleets, and a dedicated youth camp will run from 17th to 20th February, offering training for younger windsurfers.

Training at Gwithian

"This year, the BWA Tour is looking really, really strong," says Lucas. He's been putting in the work at Gwithian, one of the UK's most renowned windsurfing spots. "We had a really tricky session last week. It was me, Timo Mullen, Joe Vernon, and Steve Thorp, and JC from Windsurf Magazine was there taking some pictures. It was a hard session, but training with these guys is great."

Gwithian is known for its shifting conditions, making it both an incredible training ground and a challenging competition venue. Lucas, however, has an edge. "I've been living here for a couple of years at uni, so I feel like I know the spot well and can perform well."

Aiming for the Win

Lucas is clear on his goal: "If I sail as good as I can, hopefully, that can be enough to win the Cornish Coldwater Classic. Although there’s going to be a lot of very good guys there as well, so I’ll be pushing hard."

With the competition heating up, the event promises to deliver high-level action, and Lucas is determined to make an impact.
