Cornish Cold Water Classic 2025: Big wave madness

Gwithian, Cornwall, February 23, 2025 - The Cornish coast was alive with the thrill of competition this past weekend as the Cornish Cold Water Classic (CCC) took over Gwithian beach. From February 20-23, the UK's top windsurfing talent battled it out in epic wave sailing conditions, pushing the limits of the sport and putting on a show for the ages.

Blessed with a mega forecast, the event saw huge swells and powerful winds, creating the perfect playground for these incredible athletes. The atmosphere was electric, with a record turnout of competitors and spectators alike, all drawn in by the promise of world-class windsurfing.

Horrocks and Hilder Reign Supreme

The competition was fierce across all divisions, with standout performances from some of the biggest names in British windsurfing. Phil Horrocks proved his dominance once again, claiming the top spot in the Pro Men's division with a display of power and precision. Sarah Hilder made a triumphant return to the competitive scene, showing no signs of rust as she dominated the Ladies division with back-to-back heat wins.

"The conditions were absolutely incredible," said a stoked Phil Horrocks after his victory. "Gwithian really turned it on for us. Massive thanks to the event organizers and the BWA for putting on such a fantastic competition."

Local hero Andy King wowed the crowds with his signature aerial style, taking home the win in the Pro Expression Session. "I like jumping, sometimes that pays off," he grinned after landing a massive aerial, much to the delight of the cheering spectators.

More Than Just a Competition

The Cornish Cold Water Classic was more than just a competition; it was a celebration of windsurfing and the vibrant community that surrounds it. The event fostered a fantastic atmosphere of camaraderie and sportsmanship, with competitors pushing each other to new heights while sharing their passion for riding the waves.

Event Host Joe Vernon was thrilled with the success of the CCC. "We set out to create the ultimate wave sailing event, and with the incredible conditions and the amazing support from the BWA and the competitors, I think we achieved that," he said. "We're already looking forward to next year and making it even bigger and better!"
