Cornish Cold Water Classic Crowns Windsurfing Champions in Epic Wave Sailing Conditions

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE :

Gwithian, Cornwall, February 23, 2025 – The Cornish Cold Water Classic (CCC), held at Gwithian, Cornwall from February 20-23, concluded successfully amidst spectacular wave sailing conditions. The event, sanctioned by the British Wavesailing Association (BWA), saw a record turnout of windsurfing competitors, ranging from seasoned British champions to local favourites, all eager to tackle the challenging waves.

The event showcased Cornwall's reputation as a premier wave sailing destination, with competitors facing massive swells and strong winds. The competition attracted a diverse field of windsurfing talent, including British champions Phil Horrocks and Lucas Meldrum, alongside local star Andy King, who captivated the crowd with his unique style and aerial prowess, ultimately winning the Pro Expression Session.

Phil Horrocks demonstrated his mastery of the waves, securing first place in the highly competitive Men's Pro division. Sarah Hilder made a triumphant return to competition, dominating the Ladies division with back-to-back heat wins.

"Wow! The guys at the BWA and The Cornish ColdWater Classic gave Gwithian an amazing rebirth," said Phil Horrocks. "The event ran like clockwork even with the brutal conditions. We were all able to go out and perform to our best ability thanks to Event Water Safety who provided a crew and helped us stay off the rocks! Obviously, I’m pleased to have won, and it was great to be back here again… I’ve sailed the Gwithian event many times, the conditions don’t get much better.”

Andy King, known for his daring aerial manoeuvres, commented, “I like jumping, sometimes that pays off.”

William Maclean, BWA Chairman, praised the event, stating, “The guys at CCC put on a great event at short notice! The conditions have been epic, and this has been an all-time BWA event worthy of the international stage. Here’s to next year!”

Event Host Joe Vernon expressed his satisfaction with the event's success. “Listen, it was our aim to put on the best purist wave sailing event we could. This was our first stab at it, and we have been blessed with an amazing forecast and loads of support from the BWA and the competitors… Let’s see how far we can take it, right? We’d love to grow the event and get more international riders to come and visit our beautiful home. A huge thanks to our amazing sponsors, crew, and event team for making it all possible.”

The Cornish Cold Water Classic not only highlighted the talent of British wave sailors but also reinforced Cornwall's position as the UK's top spot for competitive wave sailing.
